Clinical Overview of Thyroid Function & Thyroid Antibody Testing

Knowledge pertaining to thyroid disorders has not received the attention it deserves. This is unfortunate because, when diagnosed, thyroid diseases are manageable, and in some cases curable. Additionally, the frequent lack of proper diagnoses based on thyroid disorders symptomatology, allow the disease to progress untreated or poorly treated. There is a need for increased clinical knowledge and recognition of thyroid symptoms in order to have a more beneficial impact on patient care.

Target Audience
This activity is intended for medical professionals who have a clinical interest in thyroid disorders as seen in the following medical specialties: endocrinology, primary care (IM, FP, GP), obstetrics/gynecology, cardiology, pediatrics, laboratory medicine, nuclear medicine, ophthalmology, neurology, psychiatry, and sleep medicine.

Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

1. Describe and evaluate the basic principles of thyroid clinical laboratory testing.
2. Identify autoimmune clinical presentations and laboratory results for hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis) and hyperthyroidism (Graves’ Disease).
3. Analyze real-world thyroid dysfunction cases with a focus on thyroid antibody testing to identify thyroid disease.
